Just saw the first trailer for my friend Scott’s new movie, a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still starring Jennifer Connelly and Keanu Reeves. I hope it makes a lot of money but more importantly that I get invited to the premiere.

“Whenever I go out to dinner with someone, I instantly freak out when it comes time to tip. It’s like, I forget that you have to do math at the end of a meal, every single time. It’s sort of annoying, because it’s not like you, say, go to the movies, but before you leave you have to solve a chemistry experiment (PS, in my experience, the answer is always carbon). Somehow, my brain immediately stops working when the bill comes (or I just get way lazy), plus I’m sort of worried that I’ll under-tip and then my dinner companion will somehow see my receipt and think I’m horribly cheap. I’m not actually cheap, I just never think waiters and waitress are, on the whole, very good at their jobs. Yeah, I just made a blanket generalization. I hope the National Association of Waiters comes and kicks my ass, because you know what I’d do? I’d leave a half-empty glass of water in their path and then watch them get distracted while they run around looking for a pitcher to refill it with. Then I’d make my escape.”

The very talented artist Kat Rohrbacher will unveil her latest work, a collection of charcoal and line drawings titled “Memento Mori,” on June 28th in her hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The subjects of her drawings are all 164 people whose photos appeared on the obituary page of Fort Wayne newspapers during April of 2007.

I’m currently in the process of helping her get the word out about the show to the general populace in Fort Wayne, as I’m sure friends and family of those depicted will be interested in viewing it. It will be on display at the SOMA Gallery in Fort Wayne from June 28 through July 10, by appointment.

Tonight I’m going to see the Orange Opera, a local band featuring my friend Mike Ostermeyer (whom I’ve written about here before).

I saw them play for the first time a few weeks ago and was pleased to discover they’re really good. (I would have supported them no matter what, but it’s nice when your friend’s band is worth spreading the word about.) They also happen to be great live.

Tonight they’re playing a free show at Mid City Grill in Fort Wayne with Nik Freitas (who opened for Rilo Kiley on their latest tour) starting at 10.
